Backyard Chicken Runs

A backyard chicken run is essential for your chicken coop. The run is the fenced area outside the coop, it should have a top on it as well. This run keeps out predators (e.g. raccoons, skunks, snakes, dogs, cats, coyotes, large birds and etc.). Chickens should be in the coop at night and allowed out during the day. The run also keeps the chickens in a select area for pest control or if they are going to be out unsupervised.
The backyard chicken run should provide at least 4 square
feet per chicken if it is a permanent chicken run. This ensures the birds plenty of room to scratch and move around in the fresh air. Hens need 12-14 hours of daylight to lay their eggs on a regular schedule.
Mobile chicken runs are typically smaller, depends on how many birds you have. Mobile backyard chicken runs are ideal for
pest control as they can be wheeled from spot to spot in the yard.

A chicken run permanent or mobile should be placed in a dry sunny spot. Remember in the summer to have some shade in the heat of the day and in winter they need to be out of the cold wind.
